Amazing pictures. It went so fast! Were chemicals involved? It's an emotional experience, even from afar. Seeing the pictures makes it more real. Thank you for all you are doing to document this story. Your work is inspiring!

It did go fast. I think the age and fragility of the wood made it fast. There were no chemicals added to speed anything up. They did start with smaller fires in barrels (mostly trying to get it smoky and realistic for trainees) but wanted to have the whole morning for training. The old house said no...we are going up sooner rather than later. The positivity of the firefighters was so helpful in me feeling like it was a good day. They are amazing people we have in Vermont. It is one of those things in life where you never know where the path you follow will lead you...and the people you get to know. I love that…

Thank you for sharing this. I imagine it was emotional but knowing it served another purpose of training for our firefighters must have been rewarding. I know I told you that's something I was considering with my childhood home. I haven't talked about it with my Mom yet. You and I should talk sometime about the process.

Thank you! Yes having another purpose was helpful (if the house had to be lost). I have a specific page in the blog that shows all of the steps and timeline I had to follow with what paperwork had to be submitted (I was thinking of you when I did it.)

You did such a great job documenting all aspects this momentous occasion. It was a reminder of how much we should appreciate our firefighters and the tremendous power of a fire. I found it interesting to see the structure used to hold water for the hoses, in lieu of a fire hydrant. Hopefully a new house will take the place of the old, making new memories, and still respecting the people who came before.

Bittersweet. The new will stand on the site of the old. Pictures are amazing. Was the person passed out at the porta potty overcome with outhouse fumes or was there actually anyone in that turn out gear?

Yes, bittersweet...not that is a dummy that was used in fire training. It did take me by surprise at first.
